Siyahamba LP (sub-saharan musical qualities/ group composition) - This lesson plan is a part of a 5 lesson secondary unit plan which explores the musical, historic, and cultural background of the piece South African hymn, Siyahamba (I use the Horace Scruggs arrangement of the piece). In lesson 4, students explore sub-saharan musical characteristics such as use of a standard bell pattern, and harmonic tendencies, and perform them for deeper understanding. In lesson 5, students apply those characteristics in creation of a group composition for performance to really engage their brains in active music-making. For the full LP, click here. |

Stay LP - This was created for an elementary (3rd Grade) unit focused on La Pentatonic. It is the 9th of 10 lessons, and during Activity 3 the students apply the scale in melodic improvisation while peers play the accompaniment for the verse of “Stay” by Rihanna on keyboard instruments.
